FreeBSD 7.2-RC2 Released

FreeBSD LogoKen Smith has announced the availability of the second release candidate for FreeBSD 7.2:

The second of the two planed release candidates for the 7.2-RELEASE cycle is now available. We believe, with the exception of the new bce(4) driver not working with lagg(4), all the major issues that have come up from the testing have been addressed. We will work with the vendor to get that issue addressed post-release.
At this point we know of no problems big enough to impact the dates for the rest of the release cycle which is here:

There is one known issue with 7.2-RC2. We switched from KDE3 to KDE4 and during my tests done before uploading the images, a problem with package dependencies for KDE4 was discovered. The kdemultimedia4 package has audio/lame as a runtime dependency but that package cannot be pre-built due to licensing issues. So the install of kdemultimedia4 fails if you choose to install kde4. The ports folks have been notified and will make the necessary adjustments before the final release.

I just can’t help but wonder .. I mean .. I’ve been asking myself this since the FreeBSD 7.2 roadmap was announced with the release of PC-BSD 7.1 just around the corner (and taking into consideration that the PC–BSD crew stated somewhere that from 7.0 on they will be following FreeBSD nomenclature)…

Given how things happend, will PC-BSD release a 7.1.1 version soon after FreeBSD gets released (considering that PC-BSD is based on FreeBSD 7.2-Pre .. after all .. the difference between 7.2-Pre and 7.2-REL is not that big … just a security/bug fixes and a binary upgrade of the base system .. nothing really worth a whole new PC-BSD release)?

Will they just rename it to PC-BSD 7.2 (no new features .. just a rename)?

Will they keep things as they stand and jump from PC-BSD 7.1 to PC-BSD 7.3 (and break the “we’d like to follow FreeBSD nomenclature” issue)??

My 2 cents … use the time between the release date of PC-BSD 7.1 and the release date of FreeBSD 7.2-REL to create a nice customised KDE4 theme/art which I found is lacking on PC-BSD 7.1 .. it actually looks as stock as it can be .. at least to me; and then release PC-BSD 7.1.1. as soon as you can. Or take FreeBSD 7.2, improve on KDE (wich apparently default to 4.2.2 and qt 4.5) and release PC-BSD 7.2 in no more than two months.

    What do you guys think?

    Regards
