FreeBSD is a free, open-source and UNIX-like operating system. Though relatively unknown, it’s a performing and powerful work-horse, capable of coping with massive work-loads whilest remaining fast, ultra-stable and rock-solid. Blogging about FreeBSD and operating systems based on this versatile, safe and secure OS, I want to generate more interest in FreeBSD and its dependants. If you need a reliable, rock-solid and performing system for either your desktop or servers, consider FreeBSD!

FreeBSD 8.0-RC3 released

The FreeBSD Project has released the third of the Release Candidates for the FreeBSD-8.0 release cycle.

The third and hopefully last of the Release Candidates for the FreeBSD 8.0 release cycle is now available. Unless something catastrophic comes up within the next couple of days we will begin the final builds for 8.0-RELEASE.

Images for amd64/i386 are available from ftp.freebsd.org. Upgrade instructions can be found here.

Why is this blog called "FreeBSD, the unknown Giant? Well, it's what IBM has called FreeBSD. It's as simple as that:

IBM: "The FreeBSD operating system is the unknown giant among free operating systems. Starting out from the 386BSD project, it is an extremely fast UNIX-like operating system mostly for the Intel chip and its clones. In many ways, FreeBSD has always been the operating system that GNU/Linux-based operating systems should have been.
