FreeDOS is a free DOS-compatible operating system for IBM-PC compatible systems. FreeDOS is made of up many different, separate programs that act as “packages” to the overall FreeDOS Project.

Just wanted to clear up something. The FreeDOS 1.1 release is a “test” release. This is a beta or rc, rather than a final release. Since it’s FreeDOS it’s probably stable and completely usable anyway.
