FreeBSD – the unknown Giant

FreeBSD is a free, open-source and UNIX-like operating system. Though relatively unknown, it’s a performing and powerful work-horse, capable of coping with massive work-loads whilest remaining fast, ultra-stable and rock-solid. Blogging about FreeBSD and operating systems based on this versatile, safe and secure OS, I want to generate more interest in FreeBSD and its dependants. If you need a reliable, rock-solid and performing system for either your desktop or servers, consider FreeBSD!

Welcome to the FreeBSD News website. My name is Gerard van Essen, the founder and maintainer of this website. I've been interested in FreeBSD for a couple of years now, have used it and I'd love to see more people use BSD operating systems. Hence this website to try to raise more awareness of FreeBSD and operating sytem based on it... [more]

Why is this blog called "FreeBSD, the unknown Giant"? Well, it's what IBM has called FreeBSD in an article titled "Why FreeBSD". It's as simple as that:

The FreeBSD operating system is the unknown giant among free operating systems. Starting out from the 386BSD project, it is an extremely fastUNIX-like operating system mostly for the Intel chip and its clones. In manyways, FreeBSD has always been the operating system that GNU/Linux-basedoperating systems should have been. It runs on out-of-date Intel machines and64-bit AMD chips, and it serves terabytes of files a day on some of the largestfile servers on earth.
