After 14 months, 24 public betas, 40 developer snapshots and more than 45,000 downloads we’re very proud to announce the availability of version 1.0

A huge thank you to everyone who has contributed patches, reported bugs, troubleshot hardware, provided translations and those actively helping in the forums. So many people have helped out with this effort it is impossible to begin naming names. We are a small group and could not have gotten this much accomplished without the community at hand.

We’d also like to thank our main sponsors Auerswald and Deciso for providing us with the financial means to continue full-time development as well as OpenVox who has donated a wide variety of testing hardware. You all are keeping this Open Source project afloat.

Tentative milestone dates for FreeBSD 7.1 and 6.4

The FreeBSD Project is about to start the release cycle for FreeBSD-7.1 and FreeBSD-6.4. The proposed schedule for the “major events” of the cycle is:

Freeze August 29
BETA September 1
Branch September 6
6.4-RC1 September 8
7.1-RC1 September 15
6.4-RC2 September 22
7.1-RC2 September 29
6.4-REL October 6
7.1-REL October 13

PC-BSD 1.5.1 available

PC-BSD version 1.5.1 is now available for download as both ISO and updates from version 1.5. This version provides updates to the default port set, as well as numerous bug fixes to the system tools & utilities.

Also, additional translations have been added to provide a more complete localized experience. Users currently running 1.5 may download a standalone PBI patch, or may simply check for updates via the System Update tool.

PC-BSD 1.5 Edison final - released

The PC-BSD Team is happy to announce the availability of PC-BSD 1.5 Edison. Some of the highlights of this version are:

Xorg 7.3
KDE 3.5.8
Based on FreeBSD 6.3 release (next version will be based on 7.0)
NEW System Updater tool - Keeps system & PBIs up to date - Allows override variables, so admins can use their own mirrors / servers to roll out updates to users.
Improvements to WiFi tool, BSSID support and better SSID support
Improvements to the PBI Removal tool - Remove a list of PBIs at a time
NEW sound detection program! Uses XML backend to identify and load modules
NEW amd64 build of 1.5, including PBI that are on our auto-build server
NEW PBI icon preview library, now a PBI file shows the icon embedded in it on your desktop, not the generic “PBI” format icon

PC-BSD is a complete desktop operating system, designed with the “casual” computer user and offers the stability and security that only a BSD-based operating system bring.

This release is now available to be downloaded from mirrors around the world. Additionally for users who are running PC-BSD 1.4 or 1,3, a installable update will be released in the next few days which migrates a system to version 1.5. Please watch www.pcbsd.org for more information!

FreeBSD Logo The other day we mentioned the availability of FreeBSD 7.0 on the FTP servers, but now 7.0 has been officially announced and released by the FreeBSD Team:

The FreeBSD Release Engineering Team is pleased to announce the availability of FreeBSD 7.0-RELEASE. This is the first release from the 7-STABLE branch which introduces many new features along with many improvements to functionality present in the earlier branches.

Read the release announcement, release notes and the errata list for further details, new features and know problems. The release announcement has also information on the downloading (FTP, bittorent etc) and upgrading existing systems.

FreeBSD Logo FreeBSD 7.0 Stable, the long awaited next major release of the popular open source BSD operating has finally arrived! The ISO’s can now be downloaded from the FreeBSD FTP or torrent servers. We still have to wait for the official announcement ;-)

pfSense 1.2 release available

The pfSense development team has announced the release of version 1.2! This brings the features and bug fixes from more than 16 months of development since the 1.0 release. Already widely tested and deployed throughout the Release Candidate phase, this release provides the finishing touches on releases already proven in a wide range of network environments. The Release Candidate versions have been downloaded more than 250,000 times.

FreeNAS 0.686.1 (stable) released

Volker Teile from the FreeNAS team has announced today that FreeNAS 0.686.1 stable has been released. The following changes and additions have been made:

Majors changes:

Upgrade Samba to 3.0.28.
Add attributes ‘Guest account’ and ‘Null passwords’ to ‘Samba: Settings’ advanced section in WebGUI.
Enhance WebGUI + rc-script to define additional group memberships for user accounts.
Replace uShare UPnP Mediaserver with MediaTomb 0.10.0. This has been done because ushare’s latest version fails to build on FreeBSD, also new version requires external libs for DLNA support which is not ported to FreeBSD right at the moment. You have to reconfigure the UPnP service to get working properly. XBox 360 is not supported.
Increase mfsroot size to 54mb for embedded version. So hopefully the OS has enough memory for logfiles,… Especially with Samba tbd files, which increases rapidely with a huge number of users accessing the system.
